This site provides public access to real-time hydrometric data collected at over 1800 locations and access to historical data collected at over 7600 stations (active and discontinued) in Canada. These data are collected under a national program jointly administered under federal-provincial and federal-territorial cost-sharing agreements. It is through partnerships that the Water Survey of Canada program has built a standardized and credible environmental information base for Canada.

The Special Studies presented on this site are special measurement campaigns (with durations of several weeks to several years) carried out by the Air Quality Research Division of Environment Canada and its government, university and industry collaborators. The Special Studies data sets consist of air and/or precipitation chemistry data collected at high temporal and/or spatial resolution for the purpose of characterizing chemical concentrations and processes in the atmosphere. The Special Studies data files were chosen because of their high potential applicability to current and future atmospheric research. The data sets available for download are provided in collaboration with the National Atmospheric Chemistry (NAtChem) Database and Analysis Facility of Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The integrated pan-Arctic snow melt onset dataset was generated by combining active and passive microwave satellite derived estimates for northern high latitude land surface, ice caps, large lakes, and sea ice (Wang et al., 2011). This dataset allows snow melt dynamics to be examined in a full pan-Arctic context and enables exploration of interactions between the terrestrial and marine components of the cryosphere. It provides a unique dataset for validating snow cover simulations from regional or global climate models during the spring transition period when snow cover exerts the strongest feedback to the climate system.

The Pacific 2001 Air Quality Study (PAC2001) was conducted from 1 August to 31 September, 2001 in the Lower Fraser Valley (LFV), British Columbia, Canada. The study consisted of a number of research projects organized to address several issues related to ambient particulate matter and ozone. A special issue of Atmospheric Environment [Vol. 38(34), Nov 2004] describes the study objectives (Li, 2004) and the study results. The data sets available for download are provided in collaboration with the National Atmospheric Chemistry (NAtChem) Database and Analysis Facility of Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Monitoring Program involves the monitoring of Great Lakes coastal wetland biota (fish, birds, anurans, aquatic macroinvertebrates) and habitat (vegetation, water quality) to provide information on coastal wetland condition for use in conservation and management decision-making. The main outputs from this program are a thorough assessment of the condition of over 1000 Great Lakes coastal wetlands and the implementation of a standardized long-term monitoring program for coastal wetlands across the Great Lakes basin. This program is funded under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and Great Lakes National Program Office. The Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) of Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has been involved in the program since 2011, and over that time has conducted fish, vegetation, aquatic macroinvertebrates and water quality surveys primarily on the Canadian shore of Lake Ontario. Program data are available by request at: https://www.greatlakeswetlands.org/.
