The majority of these materials is dredged sediment from estuarine or marine locations. Under the authority provided by the Canadian Environmental Protection Act 1999, Environment Canada regulates the use of marine disposal sites and monitors environmental conditions at representative sites. Monitoring assesses on-site and off-site environmental effects such as changes to seabed morphology, environmental quality, habitat alteration and cumulative effects. In March 2013, as part of its Disposal Site Monitoring Program, Environment Canada contracted Public Works and Government Services Canada to conduct a bathymetric survey of the Black Point Dredged Material Disposal Site. The disposal site is located in the outer waters of Saint John Harbour, NB and over a period of several decades has received dredged materials from various locations in the harbour. The survey covered a trapezoidal area of approximately 2 square kilometers ranging in depth from 5 to 27 meters. Survey equipment used included a 200 kHz multi-beam system, inertial motion sensor, and sound velocity profiler. The multi-beam data was post-processed using hydrographic processing software. Data are available in a number of mapping formats. Data were collected for environmental monitoring purposes and are not to be used for navigation. Chaque année au Canada, entre deux et quatre millions de tonnes de matériaux sont éliminés en mer. La majorité de ces matériaux correspond à des sédiments dragués dans les estuaires et le milieu marin. Conformément à la Loi Canadienne sur la Protection de l'Environnement (1999), Environnement Canada règlemente les sites d'immersion en mer et mène des études de suivis environnementaux à des lieux d’immersion représentatifs. Le suivi environnemental évalue les effets environnementaux sur, et hors des sites d’immersion, comme les changements à la morphologie des fonds marins, la qualité de l'environnement, la modification d’habitat et les effets cumulatifs. En mars 2013, dans le cadre du programme de suivi, Environnement Canada a mandaté Travaux Publics et Services Gouvernementaux Canada pour mener un suivi bathymétrique du site d'immersion de déblais de dragage à Black Point. Le site d'immersion, situé au large du port de Saint John, N-B., a reçu pendant plusieurs décennies des matériaux de dragage de divers endroits du port. Le sondage bathymétrique a couvert une zone trapézoïdale d'environ 2 kilomètres carrés, et en allant à des profondeurs de 5 à 27 mètres. Un système à faisceaux multiples de 200 kHz, un capteur de mouvement inertiel et un profileur de la vitesse du son ont été utilisés. Les données multi- faisceau ont été traitées en utilisant un logiciel de traitement hydrographique et sont disponibles dans un certain nombre de formats de cartographie.
