Experiment 1: Effets des terres rares, lanthanum, néodymium et gadolinium sur les plantes de culture et les plantes indigènes: absorption, accumulation et pH du sol

In this series of experiments we explored the relationships between Rare Earth Element (REE) toxicity/uptake/accumulation in plants and soil pH. It was hypothesized that plant sensitivity to REEs would increase when exposed to lower soil pH levels, as would be indicated by lower germination and biomass inhibition concentrations in low vs. high pH soils. A similar, but less extensive experiment was previously conducted for Ce that highlighted the need to address soil pH when evaluating REE toxicity (plants were generally more sensitive to Ce when grown in lower pH soils). One REE that was not previously tested, gadolinium (Gd), which is listed as a priority for risk assessment research needs, was included in the experiment. In addition, two of the most widely used and abundant REEs, lanthanum (La) and neodymium (Nd), were also assessed in separate experiments. Three species were tested: two native species, common milkweed, Asclepias syriaca and fowl bluegrass, Poa palustris; as well as one crop species, tomato, Solanum lycopersicum var. Beefsteak. Experiments were conducted in NWRC greenhouses of Environment and Climate Canada with plants tested individually in pots. There was an overall significant effect on percent germination and aboveground biomass of both soil pH level and dose on the three species tested. As expected, lower pH increased phytotoxicity. The measured concentrations of the REEs (Nd, Gd, and La) were almost always higher in roots than in the corresponding shoots.
