The influence of forest fires on metal deposition to lakes and peatlands in the North Slave Region, NWT
Forest fires release large amounts of metals into the air and can remobilize metal pollution previously deposited to terrestrial environments from long-range atmospheric transport. This study will generate new information on local and regional impacts of forest fires on metal deposition to lakes and peatlands in the Northwest Territories. Project findings will advance our understanding of cumulative impacts to lakes that involve climate change (which is predicted to increase the intensity of forest fires) and long-term deposition of metals. This study will elucidate the potential role of forest fires in recent trends of increasing mercury bioaccumulation in fish and wildlife of Great Slave Lake.
