Compared to the previous PRECIP product, the PRECIP-ET performs a suite of additional quality control (QC) tests and tracks issues better. For example, Doppler filters might be rejecting moderate ground echoes in a particular area and thus weak meteorological echoes would not be detectible. In this case, PRECIP-ET would flag the missing data area, whereas PRECIP would simply treat the area as no echoes. This additional quality treatment is why we have migrated to PRECIP-ET in 2013, to get an improved service. The PRECIP-ET image is designed to show the precipitation close to the ground, by using Doppler technology processing for echoes within 128 km from the radar site for the C-Band radars and 240 km for the new S-Band radars. Doppler technology allows for better resolution of the precipitation echoes and also provides the ability to detect the movement of precipitation in relation to the radar (i.e. are the raindrops or snowflakes moving towards or away from the radar and at what speed). Beyond this 128 km limit, the echoes are displayed using the more conventional CAPPI processing. Le PRECIP-ET (PRECIPET sur les images) est une extension du produit PRECIP (d’où l’utilisation de ET dans le nom du produit). Comparé à l’ancien produit PRECIP, le PRECIP-ET tient compte d’un algorithme additionnel de contrôle de qualité (CQ) pour mieux identifier les problèmes et appliquer les solutions adéquates. À titre d’exemple, les filtres Doppler peuvent rejeter des échos de sol modérés à certains endroits et ainsi les faibles échos météorologiques ne seraient pas détectés. Dans ce cas, PRECIP-ET serait capable de signaler cette zone où manquent des données, alors que le produit PRECIP l’identifierait simplement comme une zone sans aucun écho. Ce type de traitement de qualité supplémentaire est la raison pour laquelle nous avons migré vers PRECIP-ET en 2013, afin d’obtenir un service amélioré. L'image PRECIP-ET permet de montrer les précipitations qui se produisent près du sol grâce à la technologie DOPPLER de traitement des échos dans un rayon de 128 km à partir de la station radar pour les radars en bande C et de 240 km pour les nouveaux radars en S. La technologie Doppler permet d’accroître la résolution des échos de précipitation et offre également la possibilité de détecter le mouvement des précipitations à l’aide du radar (par exemple, la pluie ou la neige se rapproche-t-elle ou s’éloigne-t-elle de la station radar? Et à quelle vitesse?).
