Canada's boreal region is a vast mosaic of forests, wetlands, rivers and lakes, but anthropogenic disturbances have impacted these ecosystems resulting in habitat loss, fragmentation and threats to biodiversity. Across Canada various geospatial datasets representing anthropogenic disturbance exist for timber harvesting, hydro-electric activity, settlement and oil & gas activities; however, these products often vary in scale, attributes, time period, and mapping technique. Driven by the need for national data as part of the 2011 boreal caribou science assessment, a standardized methodology was developed and implemented to create a single geospatial dataset representing anthropogenic disturbances across a significant portion of Canada’s boreal ecosystem. The boreal ecosystem anthropogenic disturbances (BEAD) data is a vector disturbance dataset of individual linear and polygonal disturbance types that were manually collected through the interpretation of 2008 to 2010 Landsat imagery at a 1:50,000 viewing scale. Summary results identified a total polygonal anthropogenic disturbance footprint of approximately 24 million ha with forest cutblocks accounting for more than 60 % of mapped polygonal disturbance. Linear disturbance features across the boreal total approximately 600,000 km with roads and seismic exploration lines contributing to more than 80 % of the mapped linear disturbances. For distribution and use by the public the data was gridded to a 1km resolution product that can easily be incorporated into a wide variety of applications. Each disturbance type was gridded as the total per km2 (km2 / km2 for polygonal disturbances and km / km2 for linear disturbances). This product consists of 19 individual raster layers - 16 representing different disturbance types, along with layers representing the total linear and total polygonal disturbances separately and a binary mask layer defining all cells that contain disturbance values Le développement d’information géospatiale thématique reliée à la gestion et le suivi des écosystèmes en zone boréale au Canada est essentiel aux chercheurs, gestionnaires des terres, et responsables de politiques. Bien que la région boréale canadienne représente une vaste mosaïque de forêts, terres humides, rivières et lacs, les perturbations anthropiques ont cependant affectées ces écosystèmes causant la perte d’habitats, de la fragmentation ainsi que d’autres menaces à la biodiversité. Divers ensembles de données représentant les perturbations anthropiques existent pour la récolte forestière, les activités hydro-électriques, les établissements humains et les activités pétrolières et gazières. Cependant, l’échelle, les attributs, la période, et la technique de cartographie varient fréquemment entre ces produits. En raison des besoins en données pour supporter une évaluation scientifique sur la population boréale du caribou des bois (2011), une méthodologie standardisée fut développée et mise en œuvre afin de créer un ensemble de données unique représentant les perturbations anthropiques à travers une portion significative des écosystèmes en milieu boréal au Canada. Les données sur les perturbations anthropiques localisées dans les écosystèmes boréaux (PAEB) est un ensemble de données vectoriel des différents types de perturbations linéaires et polygonales. Celles-ci furent cartographiées manuellement par l’interprétation d’imagerie Landsat à une échelle d’expression de 1:50,000. Les résultats sommaires démontrent que l’empreinte totale des perturbations anthropiques polygonales est d’approximativement 24 millions ha, dont plus de 60% causée par les blocs de coupe forestière.
