Semi-aquatic furbearers as bioindicators of oil sands industrial impacts to surrounding ecosystems
Exposure to oil sands contaminants (e.g. heavy metals and PAHs) may have toxicological effects on wildlife. After 3+ years of successful collections (spanning over 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015), work will focus primarily on laboratory analyses and writing peer-reviewed publications. Localized collections of river otters, muskrat and mink might be needed to increase sample size in areas of concern. Toxicological data from heavily- and low-impacted sites in the oil sands region and at reference sites will be compared and modeled as a function of various pathophysiological metrics. Continued river otter latrine site monitoring will help in establishing population level responses.
