Monitoring for impacts of anti-coagulant rodenticides on terrestrial wildlife in British Columbia

Contamination of birds of prey by second-generation single-feed anticoagulant rodenticides (brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difethialone) is very widespread in Canada, particularly in regions such as SW BC with high populations of raptors in urban and intensive agricultural environments. PMRA implemented new risk mitigation measures, required to be implemented by 2014, to reduce exposure and poisoning of non-targets. We need to continue to monitor predators and scavengers to track their effectiveness and impact of those measures. In the past year, we continued the monitoring of raptors for rodenticide poisoning through carcass collection and autopsy; we collaborated in conducting a survey of AR residues in fur-bearing mammals from near mining and oil drilling camps. Analysis of livers from those carcasses is pending. We also conducted a pilot study on sublethal anti-coagulation processes.
