Trace metal sources and cycling in northern Alberta aquatic ecosystems

This research aims to trace the sources, dispersion and bioaccumulation of metals from oil sands activities using metal stable isotope techniques. The research will build on considerable measurement of metal concentrations that has been conducted in northern Alberta aquatic ecosystems by focusing on source atribution and transport pathways of metals using isotopic tracers. A major focus will be on mercury and an integration of existing data to assess factors regulating mercury bioavailability in northern Alberta food webs.
