The 2015 Games were awarded to Canada on November 6, 2009, by the Pan American Sports Organization. The XVII Pan American Games and the V Parapan American Games were held in Toronto, Canada, from July 10–26, 2015, and from August 7–15, 2015, respectively. Canada welcomed the 40 other countries/nations of the Americas to Toronto and the municipalities of the Greater Golden Horseshoe Area in Ontario where the summer sports events of the 2015 Pan and Parapan American Games were hosted. Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) mission and mandate for the TO2015 Games was to provide essential services for enhanced weather monitoring and forecasting and for local-level preparedness activities. The key objectives were to enhance public safety and decision making by: • issuing weather warnings; • forecasting weather conditions; • supporting critical weather sensitive government services; and • monitoring atmospheric conditions. The funding received by ECCC was used to provide state-of-the-art, 24/7, dedicated, venue-specific weather services during the Games (i.e., 24 hours per day, 7 days per week). Although ECCC’s mandate for the Games was to provide venue-specific forecasts and alerts, various ongoing research and development activities were aligned to take advantage of the unique opportunities provided by the Games. ECCC’s research showcase for the Games leveraged our state-of-the-art science and technologies. The goal was two-fold: support ECCC’s operations during the Games, and learn from the research and development to make a great meteorological service even better. ECCC showcased a number of new technologies and instruments, which are described in the following sections. The research instrument platforms provided observations that supplemented the automated land- and marine-based Mesonet. All available observations were used to increase our understanding of meteorological and air quality science, particularly over an urban environment. ECCC will use this new scientific information to improve the accuracy and lead time of its alerts. Les Jeux panaméricains et parapanaméricains sont un événement sportif estival international régional qui se tient à l’échelle de l’Amérique tous les quatre ans, durant l’année précédant les Jeux olympiques et paralympiques d’été. Le 6 novembre 2009, l’Organisation sportive panaméricaine a retenu la candidature du Canada pour les Jeux de 2015. Les XVIIes Jeux panaméricains et les Ves Jeux parapanaméricains se sont déroulés à Toronto, au Canada, respectivement du 10 au 26 juillet 2015 et du 7 au 15 août 2015. Le Canada a accueilli les 40 autres pays ou nations de l’Amérique à Toronto et dans les municipalités de la grande région du Golden Horseshoe, en Ontario, où se sont tenues les compétitions sportives d’été des Jeux panaméricains et parapanaméricains de 2015. La mission et le mandat d’Environnement et Changement Climatique Canada (ECCC) dans le cadre des Jeux TO2015 consistaient à fournir des services essentiels pour améliorer la surveillance et les prévisions météorologiques et aider les activités de préparation locales. Les grands objectifs consistaient à renforcer la sécurité publique et la prise de décisions en faisant ce qui suit : • diffuser des avertissements météorologiques; • prévoir les conditions météorologiques; • soutenir les services gouvernementaux essentiels sensibles aux conditions météorologiques; • surveiller les conditions atmosphériques. ECCC a utilisé le financement qu’il avait reçu pour fournir des services météorologiques perfectionnés et propres aux différents sites durant les Jeux, et ce, tous les jours, 24 heures sur 24. À l’occasion des Jeux, le mandat d’ECCC consistait à fournir des prévisions et des alertes propres aux sites, mais différentes activités de recherche et développement ont aussi été réalisées durant cet événement pour profiter de l’occasion unique offerte par les Jeux. La présentation des recherches d’ECCC dans le contexte des Jeux a su tirer avantage de nos travaux scientifiques et technologies de pointe. Le but poursuivi comptait deux volets : soutenir les opérations d’ECCC durant les Jeux et tirer des leçons des activités de recherche et développement pour améliorer davantage un service météorologique déjà si précieux. ECCC a présenté un certain nombre de nouvelles technologies et de nouveaux instruments, qui sont décrits dans les sections suivantes. Les plateformes des instruments de recherche ont fourni des observations complémentaires à celles du Mesonet terrestre et maritime automatisé décrit à la section 5. Toutes les observations disponibles ont été utilisées pour approfondir notre compréhension des sciences relatives à la météorologie et à la qualité de l’air, surtout en milieu urbain.
