Development and application of molecular tools to assess the acute and chronic toxicity of petroleum hydrocarbons on birds
This project focuses on the application and collaborative development of new molecular tools, primarily PCR gene arrays, to assess the acute and particularly the chronic toxicty of petroleum hydrocarbons, mainly oil sands bitumen to birds. Gene arrays produced for the chicken will be adapted for the selected seabird and seaduck monitoring species (e.g. rhinoceros auklet, Barrow's goldeneye), and for field and laboratory model species (double crested cormorant, zebra finch), and tested experimentally. The field experiments with the monitoring species will both test the arrays and provide baseline genetic responses for possible post spill or chronic exposure assessments. The laboratory studies will provide specific information on the avian toxicity of petroleum including oil sands bitumen.
